Make our communities safer and more secure

Goal: Increase the level of local public safety, including fire safety, emergency response, and community security.

Actions:

  • Encourage and fund fuel reduction projects to reduce the threat of wildland fire near our homes. Promote the development of businesses that can turn small-diameter trees and brush into useful products and put local people to work.
  • Continue to work with CalFire, local fire departments, and cell service providers to improve upcountry cell service and public information during fires and emergencies.
  • Ensure that local emergency evacuation routes are clearly marked.
  • Continue my support for upgrading and modernizing the upcountry water distribution system to improve fire protection.
  • Work with local first responders to promote the Yellow Dot program, which provides medical responders with information about your health conditions when they respond to your home or an auto accident.
  • Establish a Cannabis Commission made up of citizens, law enforcement representatives, health specialists, and others to address the challenges the county faces due to the state’s legalization of recreational marijuana use. We need to avoid making the mistakes that have led to chaos in Calaveras County. Rather than pretend that there is no local cannabis-growing problem, we need a commission that can seek out best practices from other local governments; recommend strict county zoning and other rules to protect children, public safety, neighborhood security, and the environment; and establish heavy fines for noncompliance.
  • Continue the neighborhood pine needle bin program that gives homeowners an alternative to burning and protects air quality.
  • Seek creative solutions for repairing county roads.
  • Continue my work to secure better mental health services for county residents.
  • Work with local health and law enforcement experts to develop a strategy to address the opioid crisis, which has led to more crime and homelessness in our county.
